Having opened its glacier for skiing in October, Tignes<\/a> was the first ski resort in France to open for this winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The full area will open in the next few weeks, but while the resort can offer skiing at over 3000m, it\u2019d down the entrance to resort that our attention will turn this winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every visitor to this famous resort (and those to Val d\u2019Isere<\/a>) will have noticed the impressive dam that you drive across on your ascent to Tignes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Construction completed in 1952<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The dam was built between 1946 and 1952, submerging the original village during its construction. In those early years generated one third of French hydroelectric power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many years it was the highest hydroelectric dam in Europe, but at 180m tall, it remains the highest dam in France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The electricity it produces through the force of the water is the equivalent to the annual consumption of 340,000 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A team of technicians constantly maintain the turbines and generators in the bowels of the building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Watch out for a week of special celebrations as the formal 70th<\/sup> anniversary takes place in March 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
