Serre Chevalier<\/a> is one of the best known ski resorts in the southern French Alps and for good reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With 61 lifts and 250km of slopes, the different \u2018stations\u2019 of Serre Chevalier give access to skiing between 1200m and 2735m. Add to that an average of 300 sunny days a year and 80% of the ski runs being above 2000m and it\u2019s easy to see why it\u2019s so popular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this post, we look at what\u2019s new in this great resort for the coming winter season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Serre Chevalier celebrates 80th<\/sup> anniversary<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The 80th<\/sup> anniversary of the opening of the first cable car in resort will be celebrated across the valley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main event will take place on 21 December 2021 \u2013 the date of the anniversary of the opening of the cable[1]car in 1941.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Free off-piste safety training<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The four ESF ski schools in Serre Chevalier are joining up to offer free training on how to use safety gear for off-piste skiing and ski touring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For every purchase in the valley of an off-piste kit including shovel, probe and transceiver, 2 hours of free training with ESF instructors will be offered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Zip Wire<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This winter a new giant zip wire will allow skiers and non-skiers alike to fly over the slopes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This should be awesome experience as you zoom at 100km\/hour over the pistes between Grand Serre (2491m) and Grand Alpe (2193m).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More steps to renewable energy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The resort committed in 2016 to reduce its footprint by 50% by 2030 and is on target to cut emissions by 30% by 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Much of this is driven by the addition photovoltaic solar panels added throughout the resort. There are 12 sites already on ski lifts and buildings, producing 150 000kWh per year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This winter, the production of PV energy will triple, with two new installations on the middle station of the Brian\u00e7on gondola and the piste basher garages in Mon\u00eatier, which will bring it up to 420 000 kWh per year, equivalent to 3% of the area\u2019s annual electricity consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
