Kate Bush is back on top of the charts with \u2018Running Up That Hill\u2019 (thanks to Stranger Things<\/a>), but one of her less well known albums is \u201950 Words for Snow\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just how many words for snow are there? The Sami in Lapland apparently have 180 words for snow<\/a>, but way out ahead are our friends in Scotland, with over four hundred words for snow<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Powder<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is the snow we all love best. Known romantically as \u2018Kona-Yuki\u2019 in Japanese, skiers and snowboarders around the world dream of waking up in the morning to deep, fresh powder and blue, blue skies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Puking it down<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Okay, not technically a word for snow, but an expression we love. It\u2019s rare that we think of \u2018puking\u2019 as a good thing, but when those huge flakes are throwing themselves to the floor and the snow is piling high it\u2019s time to get excited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Corduroy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Weirdly known as \u2018Manchester\u2019 snow in Sweden (because back in the day <\/strong>that\u2019s where all corduroy material came from), corduroy is perhaps the most flattering snow you can ski. Carving GS turns over freshly groomed snow is close to as good as it gets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Spring Snow<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In contrast to the uniformity of corduroy, \u2018spring snow\u2019 is formed naturally, rather than by a snow groomer. Also known as \u2018corn snow\u2019, warmer spring conditions see snow melt towards the end of each day, but then re-freeze overnight. The best time of day for spring snow depends on how quickly the day warms up, but it\u2019s all worth it when you hit that sweet spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Snowflake<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Every snowflake is unique. What else needs to be said?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Sleet<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The worst kind of snow. Frozen rain \u2013 known as \u2018graupel\u2019 in German \u2013 is the only type of snow that will sent us back to the chalet for a day off!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. Slush<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Also known as \u2018porridge\u2019, or \u2018la soupe\u2019 in French, slush is spring snow on a warm day plus a few hours. It\u2019s partially melted snow and can be very heavy underfoot. Depending how much slush is on the piste, it could be worth taking the lift down for a change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
