Val d’Is\u00e8re is known now as one of the world\u2019s best ski resorts, but did you know that it was in February 1936 that their first lift was installed?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ski school had already been founded four years earlier by Charles Diebold, and shortly after Robert Pitte opened the first ski shop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Large fields, free of trees, stones and fences, were perfect for skiing, but the early pioneers had to walk up the slopes (or get a lift from a tractor).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First lift in 1936<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It was only in 1936 that the Rogoney drag lift became the first in the resort, taking skiers from the current nursery slope area towards the trees of the Solaise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabriel Julliard was the engineer behind this innovation which changed the direction of this small Savoyarde village forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nicolas Bazile, the mayor of Val d’Is\u00e8re<\/a> at the time, was delighted:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have our ski lift. It takes skiers up to the trees. They can benefit, without fatigue, from a gain in altitude.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three pistes on offer<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Initially there were three pistes from the top. They were not categorised by colour, but the \u2018schuss\u2019 sounds like a black, with the other routes designed to avoid \u2018chutes catapultueuses\u2019 (\u2018catapultuous falls\u2019) more like blues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The local newspaper Le Petit Dauphinois announced optimistically that \u201cWe can no longer say that skiing is a tiring sport.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Val d’Is\u00e8re is now one of the best ski resorts in the world and a favourite with Chaletline staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019re not going to claim that it\u2019s not sometimes \u2018tiring\u2019, but we definitely prefer taking a lift than walking up the slopes!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
