St Anton<\/a>\u00a0has been using renewable hydropower since the beginning of the 20th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Full steam ahead into the future” was the motto in 1907, when the first hydroelectric plant harnessed the power of the Rosanna River and a 20kW power station supplied several inns with electric lighting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In 1985, a new hydro power plant using the 31m-high Verwall reservoir was completed ensuring the town\u2019s annual electricity needs and in 2005, another hydroelectric plant at over 2000m at Kartell opened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n According to Markus Strolz, MD of the local energy company, EWA, the region now generates around 53 gigawatt hours per year, of which approximately 33 GWh are consumed in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Another development is the district heating plant, which opened in 2021.
