There’s a paradox in skiing that it’s a sport that’s very hard to enjoy without creating even more of the carbon emissions that contribute to climate change and threaten the future of the sport.<\/p>\n

Many ski resorts fully recognise this challenge and are making changes to make their operations sustainable – a major breakthrough in this area is the hybrid piste groomer.<\/p>\n

The first hybrid piste groomer<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Kassbohrer-designed machine – the\u00a0PistenBully 600E+ – was first seen on the slopes last season in Courchevel<\/a>.<\/p>\n

At a cost of \u20ac350,000, it’s a significant investment, but it delivers savings as well. \u00a0There is a decrease in carbon emissions and fuel savings of 20%, as well as a 99% decrease in particulates.<\/p>\n

There are 21 snow groomers in the Courchevel fleet, operated by 46 drivers. \u00a0Other resorts, including Alpe d’Huez,<\/a> Val Thorens<\/a> and Serre Chevalier<\/a> have also now invested in models.<\/p>\n

Eco-friendly Snow cannons<\/strong><\/p>\n

Courchevel has also upgraded its snow cannons. \u00a0The resort has 578 machines covering 60% of the ski area.<\/p>\n

This winter the latest additions will use less water, less electricity and less air, according to Thomas Thor-Jensen, Ski Area Director.<\/p>\n

Eight new generation cannons have been installed on the new Park City piste at a cost of \u20ac30,000, and these new state-of-the-art machines currently accounts for 55% of the total numbers.<\/p>\n
