There’s a paradox in skiing that it’s a sport that’s very hard to enjoy without creating even more of the carbon emissions that contribute to climate change and threaten the future of the sport.
Many ski resorts fully recognise this challenge and are making changes to make their operations sustainable – a major breakthrough in this area is the hybrid piste groomer.
The first hybrid piste groomer
The Kassbohrer-designed machine – the PistenBully 600E+ – was first seen on the slopes last season in Courchevel.
At a cost of €350,000, it’s a significant investment, but it delivers savings as well. There is a decrease in carbon emissions and fuel savings of 20%, as well as a 99% decrease in particulates.
There are 21 snow groomers in the Courchevel fleet, operated by 46 drivers. Other resorts, including Alpe d’Huez, Val Thorens and Serre Chevalier have also now invested in models.
Eco-friendly Snow cannons
Courchevel has also upgraded its snow cannons. The resort has 578 machines covering 60% of the ski area.
This winter the latest additions will use less water, less electricity and less air, according to Thomas Thor-Jensen, Ski Area Director.
Eight new generation cannons have been installed on the new Park City piste at a cost of €30,000, and these new state-of-the-art machines currently accounts for 55% of the total numbers.
