Top marks to the British Consulate in Marseille and Crystal Ski Holidays who teamed up last week and helped local volunteers to clean up France’s longest glacier, the Mer de Glace in Chamonix.
18 tonnes of rubbish collected
This initiative has been been running since 2008 and is organised by the town of Chamonix-Mont-Blanc , the French Alpine Club, Lafuma and other local groups.
Volunteers have collected 18 tons of rubbish during the time. The rubbish has come from 500,000 visitors to the glacier, as well as abandoned bivouacs, cables and parts of lifts that have reappeared years later as the glacier has moved and melted.
