Val Thorens has invested €14m in a new gondola to replace the old Moraine chairlift for the 2017/18 winter season.
The new lift will have 10-seater cabins and will offer warmth and comfort for all levels of skiers. The length of the new lift is 2454m , vertical ascent 466m and the carrying capacity is 2800 skiers per hour.
New Blue run
Over in the Plein Sud sector a new blue run has been added. This goes across the top of the resort via a lovely balcony route overlooking Val Thorens village.
It’s a very busy run, especially at the end of the day for skiers returning from Meribel and Courchevel and other Les 3 Vallées resorts. The new slope will make it simpler for skiers to get back to the top of the resort.
The estimated cost of the new run is 500,000 euros.
Grand Premiere
Val Thorens opens for the 2017/18 season on 18 November and the following weekend is the ‘Grand Premiere’ – effectively the launch of the French ski season.
The resort is expecting up to 15,000 skiers per day and 60 brands will offer almost 5000 tests of the season’s new equipment. Around 80% of the ski area is expected to be open, depending on conditions.
Professionals from major brands will come together in Val Thorens to offer an exclusive sneak peek at innovations in equipment, clothing and accessories.
Throughout the weekend, there will be a number of activity zones on offer for skiers and snowboarders, including a mini snowpark, big air bag, snow scooter trampolining, ski touring area and carving zone.
The season is scheduled to run to the 8th May 2018.
