€134 million to be invested in Serre Chevalier over 30 years

Serre Chevalier has announced that it plans to invest €134m in the resort over the next 30 years.

Most of the money will go into upgrading the lift system, with €83.5m allocated to new lifts. Compagnie des Alpes – owners of the resort – are also committing €10.9m to creating artificial snow, €33million on snow groomers and more ‘regular’ investments.

The program is supported by €2.8 million regional grant with the rest coming out of the Compagnie des Alpes pocket.

60 million in six years

The bulk of the investment will focus on the first six years. Patrick Arnaud, CEO of Serre Chevalier ski area wants to improve all the links between the different ‘stations’:

“In 2010, we opened the Vallons chairlift to connect Villeneuve and Le Monêtier; and this year we opened the Rocher-Blanc chairlift for the Briançon-Chantemerle route.”

More high-capacity chairlifts will be introduced and older models replaced, especially where there’s an opportunity to improve safety for children.

“We also want to secure the ‘skiability’ of the area and will increase the area covered by artificial snow, including optimising the technology with more units to create snow at marginal temperatures.”

2600 new beds

One of the conditions of Compagnie des Alpes was that the resort needs to increase the number of beds in resort. The target is 2600 new beds, distributed between the municipalities of La Salle-les-Alpes and Le Monêtier-les-Bains. According to Patrick Arnaud, these should allow the resort to increase low season numbers by 20%.
