Work has already started on the construction of a new sports centre in Val Thorens, as the resort puts the pandemic behind it and focusses on the future.
In a normal year, Val Thorens would still be open for skiing, but in the absence of skiers and snowboarders, demolition work began on the old sports centre on Wednesday 06 April.
Demolition work has already begun
The project is being managed by the SEEM team from the Martel Groupe, who are clearing the 7800 m² footprint of the existing building.
The demolition element of the project will last until the end of May 2021, before earthworks, foundations and structural work begin.
“Contemporary and Iconic Architecture”
The original sports centre in Val Thorens was built in 1980 and opened to the public forty years ago in 1981. It has always been a focal point in the resort and included a shopping centre as well as sports facilities.
The ambitious new concept will be sleek with “contemporary and iconic architecture”, designed by Parisien company Dubuisson.
It will be styled with a nod to the shape of a snowboard and will include the creation of a large public space on the roof of the building for use in winter as well as summer.
Scheduled to open in winter 2022/23
Environmental themes are a key element of the plans, with lower energy use, even with a similar sized building. The new sports centre in Val Thorens is expected to open to the public at the start of winter 2022/2023.
