From this weekend (10 July 2021), Alpe d’Huez will become the first ski resort to offer 5G mobile connectivity.
The new 5G network, delivered by Orange, will bring speeds three to four times faster than 4G on 3.5GHz frequencies. Orange is rolling out the 5G network in France slowly to avoid saturation.
It will mean that – when you’re not flying around the slopes – you’ll see super-fast upload and download speeds for posting your social media clips of the days or when you want to ‘Netflix and Chill’.
“Connectivity is essential”
“Digital development is essential for the attractiveness of destinations. Connectivity is essential for everyone, everywhere, at work, when travelling and on holiday.”
Jean-Yves Noyrey, Mayor of Huez
Here’s the science bit…
5G is the first mobile standard that integrates the optimisation of energy consumption into its design.
A key element of this greater efficiency is that the antennas are activated only on demand i.e. they transmit only in the direction of the terminals that need them, and only when they need them.
By reducing the broadcasting of signals, the 5G network is more energy efficient than 4G and can therefore absorb much more data traffic, while keeping energy consumption under control.
