New Roche de Mio Gondola lift in La Plagne to open in December 2025

La Plagne is set to upgrade its lift system for the 2025/26 winter season as the brand-new Roche de Mio gondola will link Plagne Bellecôte directly to the Roche de Mio summit.

The €36 million gondola will travel via an intermediate station at Col de Forcle and replace the existing forty-year-old lift.

The new route will bypass Belle Plagne and improve access to Champagny, Bellecôte and the Grande Rochette area.

Twice as many skiers in half the time

The new gondola features 10‑seat cabins and a capacity of up to 3,140 skiers per hour — more than double the current 1,440 people per hour. Additionally, the journey time will be halved from around 16 minutes to about 8 minutes.

Construction started this summer on the base station at Plagne Bellecôte and the mid‑station near Col de Forcle. The new lift is expected to open in December 2025.

Gondola from Aime to La Plagne?

Discussion is also underway about a possible new gondola lift from Aime in the valley floor to La Plagne.

The idea is to create the lift in time for the 2030 Winter Olympics. It is very early stages, but the idea is that it would connect directly from the railway station to Plagne Centre, with a stop at La Roche. The latter is the location of the bobsleigh track, which will host that competition during the Olympics.

It would take about 17 minutes from Aime to Plagne Centre, about half of the current driving time and cost around €106 million, including the associated work on parking, road access and risk assessments.

A vote by locals to decide if the project will go ahead will take place in spring 2026.
