Chamonix is one of the world’s great ski resorts. While the skiing is fantastic, this historic resort stands out for the outstanding non-ski activities the resort offers.
One must for any visit to Chamonix – in winter or in summer – is a visit to the Aiguille du Midi. Perched at an altitude of 3842 meters, it’s the closest non-mountaineers can get to Europe’s highest mountain, Mont Blanc.
The Aiguille du Midi is easy to access from Chamonix via two cable cars, which whisk you rapidly to top. The views are incredible but try not to rush on arrival – it can be easy to underestimate the effect of altitude!
So, what are the best things to do when you visit the Aiguille du Midi…
Ski the Vallée Blanche
The Vallée Blanche is a legendary 20-kilometre off-piste run that begins from the Aiguille du Midi. Skiing over glaciers and between the iconic peaks of the Mont Blanc massif, you ski over the Mer de Glace to Montenvers. In the right conditions, you can even ski from there all the way back to Chamonix. Booking a mountain guide is essential as this route traverses seracs and crevasses.

Paraglide from the Aiguille du Midi
The views are amazing from the top, but for a unique aerial perspective of Chamonix, why treat yourself to a paragliding flight from the Aiguille du Midi.
Accompanied by a professional pilot, you’ll soar over the Alpine massifs, enjoying breathtaking views of the Mont Blanc massif and its glaciers. This unforgettable experience will allow you to experience the freedom of flight while admiring breathtaking panoramas.

Gaze at the glaciers
The Aiguille du Midi isn’t just for mountaineers. There are multiple panoramic terraces with sweeping views of the glaciers and Alpine peaks, including Mont Blanc and the entire massif.

Step into the Void
The ‘Step into the Void’ is a glass cube suspended more than 1000 meters above the glaciers below. It’s an incredible experience, but maybe not one if you don’t have a head for heights!

Enjoy the panoramic restaurant
The restaurant “Le 3842” at the Aiguille du Midi is one of the highest in Europe. This is a chance to sit back and enjoy French gastronomy at its best. With only 26 seats, we recommend you book in advance.
Alternatively, the “Summit 3842” cafeteria offers snacks and drinks to go, ideal for a quick break while enjoying the scenery.
