Les Menuires is known for offering a high and sunny base for exploring the huge Les 3 Vallees ski area, but without having to shell out Meribel or Courchevel prices.
For the 2017/18 winter this family friendly resort has made several improvements and has plenty of events arranged to make sure there’s lots going on for anyone heading there this season.
Aesthetics under Lights
If there’s one criticism of Les Menuires, it’s that it’s not as ‘pretty’ as some of the more traditional Savoyard ski resorts. Personally, the slopes more than make up for that, but this season, the resort is making an extra effort to improve the town’s aesthetics.
Many of the resort’s buildings, mostly constructed in the 1960s, will be lit up at night with special effects to accentuate their individuality. Les Menuires is working with designer Laurent Fachard, who has previously coordinated the impressive December lighting up of Lyon.
More Snow-Making facilities
Work continues this season as €2.5m is invested in snow making facilities throughout the ski area. This winter you will be able to benefit from 15 new snow machines on La Masse, 7 new machines on the Violette green piste that brings skiers back to the centre of La Croisette and 17 new snow machines around the Snowpark area.
Wake up your Inner Yeti!
If you’ve tried on of the UK’s adventure races such as Tough Mudder or the Spartan Race, then why not combine a skiing holiday with a brand new physical challenge.
The Yeti Race is an increasingly popular endurance snow trail race. Available over both 10k and a tough 20k courses, this is test for teams of two to take on other teams in a completely snow-covered course.
This will test your strength, agility, precision, concentration, endurance and team work are the key ingredients for this wacky and one-of-a-kind race course. It takes place on 11 March, so look for a chalet holiday out to the Alps departing Saturday 10 March.
Party at European Gay Ski Week
Taking place from 17-24 March 2018, European Gay Ski Week will be celebrating its 10th anniversary in Les Menuires.
The resort is expecting over 1500 visitors from more than 40 countries for this hugely popular LGBT event featuring a whole line up of activities, bands, concerts and parties.
Relax at Yoga Week
A month later, Les Menuires offers a very different – and slightly calmer – event when it hosts Yoga Week from 07-14 April 2018.
This is week dedicated to both skiing and all things yoga. Included in the week will be yoga, sophrology, advice on how to avoid burn-out and how to meditate, shiatsu and massage.
Stay in a mountain refuge overnight
The Refuge du Lac du Lou has been renovated with a sleek and modern extension alongside, high and remote alongside the Lac du Lou.
Sleeping a maximum of 30 guests, and run by the Belleville Valley Mountain Guides this beautiful remote lodge can welcome ski tourers, off piste skiers (via La Point de la Masse) or those prepared to take a one-hour hike on snow-shoes.
No Ski Clothes, No Worry
Are you skiing for the first time this winter? This season a new company Ski Chic is giving skiers and snowboarders the opportunity to hire ski clothes from €80 per week. Simply order your clothes online and they’ll be delivered to your chalet in resort. If any items don’t fit, then you can swap the order using their next day delivery service.
