St Anton: leading sustainable energy in Austria

Did you know that St Anton is one of the few Tyrolean communities that is almost completely energy self-sufficient, thanks to low carbon electricity generation.

The resort only has 3000 permanent inhabitants, but the population can reach 20,000 in the peak of winter, so electricity demands can be significant.

Hydropower since 1907

St Anton has been using renewable hydropower since the beginning of the 20th century.

“Full steam ahead into the future” was the motto in 1907, when the first hydroelectric plant harnessed the power of the Rosanna River and a 20kW power station supplied several inns with electric lighting.

In 1985, a new hydro power plant using the 31m-high Verwall reservoir was completed ensuring the town’s annual electricity needs and in 2005, another hydroelectric plant at over 2000m at Kartell opened.

Self-sufficient for electricity

According to Markus Strolz, MD of the local energy company, EWA, the region now generates around 53 gigawatt hours per year, of which approximately 33 GWh are consumed in the region.

Another development is the district heating plant, which opened in 2021. It supplies 80 properties and saves 1.8 million litres of heating oil and 4800 tons of CO2 annually.
