La Rosière celebrates 40 years of the Espace San Bernardo ski area

This winter La Rosière celebrates the 40th anniversary of its link with the Italian ski resort of La Thuile, with whom it shares the Espace San Bernardo ski area.

The south-facing resort of La Rosière offers panoramic views over Haute-Tarentaise and 154km of slopes to enjoy. Importantly, 83% of the slopes in La Rosière are located above 1850m.

Linked to La Thuile since 1984

Before 1984, skiers who wanted to try the Italian slopes in La Thuile had to navigate an off-piste route, then hike up before finally crossing onto the Italian side.

A new, faster, more efficient chairlift…

There’s also good news that the Chardonnet chairlift, which helps connect the two resorts, is getting a makeover.

The old fixed three-seater chairlift is being replaced by a detachable six-seater. It’s a €9 million investment that will see a new lift with a capacity of 3,000 people per hour and a speed of 5.5 meters per second.

Compared to the old model, the new lift will have less of a visual impact with fewer pylons and chairs. It will also save 5-8% energy and reduce oil consumption thanks to its Direct Drive motor system.

…and you can go down too!

One of the biggest advantages of the new, improved lift is that previously, accessing Italy was challenging for some beginner skiers, as the route meant you had to take a red run. However, with the new lift, skiers can now ride the chairlift downhill as well as up, making the crossing to Italy more accessible.

Even better for skiers in La Rosière wanting to enjoy the full Espace San Bernardo ski area, the link to Italy will remain open through to the last day of the season on Monday 21 April 2025 (Easter Monday).
