We always love a good April Fool and the ski industry is always reliable at producing them. These are some of the best from 2023 that caught our eye…
1. The Piste-Basher that runs on cheese
In a world that is increasingly seeking newer, sustainable ways of powering vehicles then what better idea than a piste-basher that runs on cheese.
This video, produced by Val d’Isère, is in French, but you get the idea – it’s the perfect way to use up all those wasted rinds that get left behind after all the raclettes and fondues consumed every winter in ski resorts.
2. A tax on Mont Blanc views
The two inevitabilities in life, according to Mark Twain, are death and taxation, so a tax on any property that has a view of Mont Blanc is worryingly plausible.
The French resort of Combloux leaked the news that from 01 July the ‘Mont Blanc Tax’ would apply to all owners and tenants with even a partial view of Europe’s highest mountain.
For houses further away, the tax would be reduced accordingly, as it would also be in proportion to any bad weather spoiling the view!
3. Ski lesson for dogs
Is it time for man’s best friend to get on skis? La Plagne thinks so and plan to introduce ski lessons for our canine pals.
At the end of the week, each student is awarded a medal: “Some eat it before the end of the ceremony but in general, it’s a real motivation to come back the following year and progress further.”
4. Solar-Powered touring skis
Strangely, ski manufacturer chose April Fool’s Day to announce the launch of their new electrically-powered touring skis.
The eVölkl-01 is powered by solar energy, with PV panels installed on the top of the ski, making it so much easier to get up those hills!
5. Express lane for skiers at Geneva Airport
Perhaps our favourite of all the ski April Fools from 2023 was this gem from the team at Geneva Airport. They released news of a new express lane, reserved for skiers, that will open in time for next winter.
The new lane was shown off in this brilliant video, demonstrating how passengers will be able to save precious time, checking in and at customs.
