The French ski resort of Avoriaz is one of our favourites in the Alps.
Located in the heart of the huge Portes du Soleil ski area, Avoriaz is on the border of France and Switzerland and offers the highest skiing in the area.
But why is the logo of Avoriaz reindeer antlers?
The story dates back to the opening of the resort. You can find out all about the history of Avoriaz in our previous blog post, that details how a few fields in the mountains above Morzine became one of Europe’s premier ski resorts.
When the resort opened, reindeer were brought in from Lapland to pull sleds in the car-free resort.
After taking part in a promotional tour around Europe, culminating in a parade on the Champs-Elysées, the reindeer finally arrived in Avoriaz.
The reindeer enjoyed life in the resort, but were eventually replaced by stronger Jura horses, who had the power to tackle the steep local paths.
