New Vallon Gondola to open in Val d’Isère in December 2024

Work has started on replacing the Vallon de l’Iseran gondola in the Fornet sector of Val d’Isère.

The old lift carried skiers for the last time earlier this month after 41 years in operation and nearly 25 million rotations.

New 10-seater gondola

The six-seater lift was inaugurated in 1983 and will be replaced with a 10-seater gondola for the 2024/25 winter season.

The cost of the project is a hefty €18 million, but the new lift will increase uphill capacity by 85% to 1350 people per hour.

The journey will take 6 minutes and 30 seconds to travel from 2324m to the top station of 2790m.

New base and top stations

The base station will move location slightly and while the top station will remain in the same spot, it will also be rebuilt.

Environmental impact

Every effort will be made to ensure a limited impact on the environment. This means that 32 existing pylons will be removed as well as two button lifts, with revegetation taking place in those areas.

Due to open in December 2024

The new lift will open in December 2024 in time for the 2024/25 winter.
