Major lift upgrade for La Thuile as new gondola nears completion

La Thuile in Italy has unveiled one of the most significant lift investments in its history for next winter, with a brand-new Leitner gondola scheduled to open for the 2026/27 ski season.

Key link to La Rosière

The new Les Suches-Chaz Dura gondola will replace two ageing chairlifts, dramatically improving access to both La Thuile and neighbouring La Rosière in France.

The €35 million project is a vital link for the resort as it provides the only lift access to the Petit St Bernard sector and the cross-border connection with La Rosière.

The new gondola will replace two fixed-grip triple chairlifts – La Combe and Terre Noire – and take skiers and snowboarders from 2200m to 2576m.

Better and faster connections

According to local lift operator Funivie Piccolo San Bernardo, journey times will be reduced to around six minutes, weather protection will be improved, and overall uplift capacity will increase to 3000 people per hour.

Beginners will also benefit from easier access to the nursery slopes served by the lower section of the route, while experienced skiers heading towards the higher terrain and the French border should encounter fewer bottlenecks during busy periods.

La Thuile and La Rosière form the Espace San Bernardo ski domain, which offers around 150km of pistes shared between Italy and France.
