One of the joys of travelling to a ski resort is to escape normal life. That’s why we love car-free resorts.
It means you can walk pedestrianised streets in safety, taking your time to enjoy the views and shopping on offer.
Car-free resorts are even better if you have children with you as you don’t have to worry about your little ones.
Here are five of our favourite car-free ski resorts:
Avoriaz
This history of Avoriaz is a story in itself, so much so that we wrote a special blog post about it here.
The resort was specifically designed to be car free when it opened in 1966. There are horse-drawn shuttles that take you to your accommodation from the car park on the edge of the resort, with a wonderful playground and the impressive ‘Aquariaz’ aquacentre in the middle of the resort.
Flaine
Another resort created in the 1960s, Flaine’s architecture can be divisive, but is considered a work of art by many.
As you wander around the Bauhaus-inspired buildings, make sure you look out for the sculptures by Picasso and Jean Dubuffet.
La Tania
Although there are roads in La Tania, the snow front area is car free. It makes it a perfect base for families.
Young children can transition seamlessly from the Piou Piou Club to the nearby ‘magic carpet’ on the beginners’ slope. And for adults, it’s the perfect base to explore Les 3 Vallées – the world’s largest ski area.
Zermatt
For many skiers, Zermatt is the ultimate car free resort. All cars must be parked in the village of Täsch, from where access to this most famous of ski resorts in Switzerland is then possible by taking a short train journey.
On arrival in Zermatt, guests can walk or take one of the resort’s famous electric taxis to their hotel.
Les Arcs 1950
Arc 1950 is the newest of the Les Arcs resorts in the Paradiski region. Cars are all stored in underground car parks, allowing the resort to be fully pedestrianised.
It’s ideal for parents with young children looking for accommodation options in a resort where playing in the snow and skiing on it can be done in perfect safety.
