Skiers have frequented Geilo for over a century and although the resort has clearly greatly modernised since then, it still retains some of its charm and tradition.  Although the village height may seem a little low, especially  compared to many alpine resorts, Geilo enjoys a long and reliable snow season from mid-November through to early May. The Geilolia Ski centre (formerly known as Vestlia) provides the perfect environment for beginners and family ski holidays with its award winning ski school.   Christmas and New Year guests can expect an extra special programme of ski holiday activities and most hotels are visited by Father Christmas and his reindeer on Christmas Eve.  (Please note that Christmas is celebrated on the 24th December in Scandinavia and the ski centre closes early on Christmas Eve.)

There are two skiing areas, the north facing Geilolia and new Kikut area and the south facing main ski area immediately behind the village.  These are linked by a free ski bus.  Many of the runs are wide and uncrowded cruising runs on the huge snow fields above the tree-line, ideal for improving your technique.  There are also a variety of runs down to the village through the trees.  Geilo has five black runs including a couple of testing mogul fields, although most experts will be better entertained by the extensive off-piste.  For the boarders there is a specially designed terrain park including two excellent snowboard parks and a boarder-cross park, offering half-pipes, super-pipe, jumps and bumps.

Although Geilo is a quiet village, at weekends the nightlife comes alive with a variety of bars, restaurants and cafes to wind down in after a hard week on the slopes.  The more hardened partiers may wish to look elsewhere, but families will have plenty to occupy them both in and outdoors.
